To respond to a criticism, I am aware that the bible story does not say that death is the punishment - just suffering. There is a reason that there is so much indifference to women suffering in childbirth, and such willful refusal to recognize that suffering is often an indication something has gone terribly wrong and action needs to be taken to preserve her life and health. Instead, when women die in pregnancy because of a septic miscarriage or something of that nature, people block out the suffering and tell themselves that they’re just being punished by a loving God, until the problem is undeniable. By then it is often too late to save her.
