I've worked in a few nursing homes in my career. Here's my professional opinion as a random citizen based on what would cross my mind if he were my patient. He's not, obviously.
I'm an SLP with a stutter. I don't consider it a deficit, despite Joy Reid's ignorant comment. It used to be so severe I would be unable to get any sound out and wou⁶ld just shake. But, that was due to my reaction to the stutter, not the stutter itself. That meant it could be changed. My stutter persisted. My speech impediment and communication impairment did not. Stuttering is not a deficit. Stuttering just is. Stutter openly and honestly and if you've never pretended to stutter, look up pseudostuttering and give it a try.
